Middle Mountain Momma
Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 01:50PM So this past weekend was the Middle Mountain Momma which is one of my favorite races of the year. Not only can you choose between and xc race and the enduro but the course takes you up into some real mountains that separate the men from the boys. One perk to this race is that if you have the time you can do a little camping before and after the race. So the RCCC boys decided we were going to head up on Saturday and spend two nights out on the lamb while sticking a race in there somewhere. On the way to the mountains we got a little entertainment while heading down I-64. Check out the fast and furious hot rodding banana we encountered.
Shortly after we headed down the road for some well deserved lunch at one of the best German Restaurants found in the states. The Edelweiss Restaurant located outside of Stuarts Draft, VA is a
required stop for any road trip. It has a quaint setting, outdoor seating, and great beers that will make you coming back for more.
After we had stuffed ourselves with your classic German meals and put a pitcher of beer out of its misery we we back on our way. Just a little tip they are closed on Mondays and I'd hate for you to miss out.
Once we got to Douthat State Park we set up camp and continued to enjoy the night by the lake. We hung out by the camp fire and waited for the spectacular Moon to rise. If any of you didn't hear last weekend was the closest the moon has orbited to Earth in years. It defiantly put on a show and was even hard to look at because of how bright and clear it was.
In the morning it was race time and all three of us were chomping at the bit to head up into the mountains. If you have never ridden at Douthat State Park you are in for a treat. It has some of the best downhills and some really spectacular views. The trails are always open and in great condition which means you will never be disappointed. The three of us finished in one piece which is always an accomplishment considering you can hit upwards of 35mph on the downhills.
After the race we were treated with a fulfilling lunch provided by the race sponsors and watched as the other riders finished up. The rest of the night was spent around the campfire roasting hotdogs followed by throwing back a few ice colds. We know we enjoyed ourselves and we hope you did to. Hope to see you all out there next year. If you are interested in seeing how everyone did the race results can be found here.
See you out on the trails.
